When people think of Vietnamese mythical creatures, the dragon, phoenix, or qilin usually come to mind first. Yet there is another mythical guardian that has quietly existed in Vietnamese life for centuries, rarely spoken of Nghê.

Commonly found at communal houses, temples, pagodas, village gates, and old ancestral homes, Nghê silently watches over these familiar spaces, becoming a lasting part of Vietnamese life and folk art.
2. What is Nghê?
Nghê is not a real creature, but a benevolent guardian spirit shaped by the imagination and hands of ancient Vietnamese artisans. In its form, one can glimpse familiar traits of the dog, lion, dragon, and other symbolic figures, blended into something entirely its own.

Despite carrying the solemn air of a guardian, the Nghê remains warm-hearted and approachable. Neither fierce nor distant, it feels like a familiar friend, simple and sincere, much like the Vietnamese spirit itself.
3. Many Forms of Nghê
The Nghê has no single fixed form. Across different eras and regions, artisans freely reshaped and reimagined it, so that each Nghê carries its own character while still holding a distinctly Vietnamese identity.
Some sit in solemn, respectful vigil; others bare their teeth in a wide, joyful grin, playful atop communal house roofs or by the doorstep. It is this very range of expression that gives the Vietnamese Nghê its charm, and inspired the folk saying: "Smile like a Nghê."

4. Nghê: The Inspiration Behind Shimmer
Among this rich variety, Shimmer chose to recreate the Nghê in the form of a familiar dog - an image closely bonded to Vietnamese life across generations.
Seated in a solemn, dignified posture with a precious pearl held in its mouth, a symbol of wisdom and clarity, Shimmer's Nghê carries wishes for protection, integrity, and peace.

6. Nghê Through Vietnamese Hands
Drawing inspiration from this traditional guardian spirit, Shimmer recreates the Nghê in 925 sterling silver, finished by hand by skilled Vietnamese jewelry artisans.
Every engraved line carries forward a connection between ancient craftsmanship and today's Vietnamese jewelry-making, so that the Nghê is not only preserved, but also rediscovered and cherished anew as a symbol of Vietnamese culture.
